The Smith Family An Extended Family Portrait Session in Manotick, ON

This family! They have been such great supporters of me over the last few years. I sort of feel like I’m an honorary member at this point! Remember these first birthday portraits? And this baby girl newborn session and this one? Earlier this year they mentioned that they’d like to do an extended family portrait session involving grandparents and two nuclear families. Because I shoot weddings I’m used to photographing large family groups. But it’s not often that I have a whole portrait session to get so many great combinations.

A week or so before their session they asked me for some outfit advice, which I get pretty often! Well coordinated outfits can really pull the images together and makes them look that much more polished, and it doesn’t have to be difficult! The key is to pick one or two main colours and neutrals, and build around that. Not everyone needs to be wearing both colours! And mixing and matching patterns, solids, and a variety of textures adds a lot of visual interest and depth to your images.

So what shouldn’t you wear? While I’m a firm believer that some rules are meant to be broken, there are definitely certain outfit selections that I would stay away from if you can. T-shirts with logos and writing on them can be tricky, and running shoes might be too casual – even bare feet are usually preferable! Shirts with really narrow stripes can do strange things on camera, so avoid them. And the most important thing to avoid is clothing that makes you feel uncomfortable! When you love what you’re wearing, you’re going to feel confident and are more likely to love those images! And we all know that if kids are uncomfortable they’re more likely to squirm and have short fuses. Pick outfits that you feel free to walk, bend, and sit in comfortably.

We had to reschedule the Smith extended family portrait session due to rain (holy moly we’ve had so much rain this year!), but thankfully the next morning was nice and sunny! These guys were coming from all over, so we met in Manotick in the middle of everyone. They looked fantastic all together and we had such a good time!

Smiths (and Kroegers!), thank you for your continued trust in me to capture your growing family. I hope you love the images as much as I do!
