It’s been a long time since I photographed a newborn. For the last few years I’ve taken a hiatus. I love children and babies, and although I always have a great time when I’m with kids, I noticed that it was tough on me in the days afterwards. That’s an awkward place to be in...
When Tara messaged me to tell me that she was expecting a baby girl and that they’d like to have a newborn session, I got so excited that I went out and bought a bunch of new wraps. I like to keep my newborn photography pretty natural and simple, but I like nice fabric, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I browse unique headbands in my spare time! So when I saw one that was khaki green with little pinecones and lace in it, I knew it had to go to baby girl Kroeger. This family is plaid-wearing’ and proud of it! And I’m sure little Aurora will grow up to be equally at ease in a pair of heels or rubber boots.
About two and a half years ago I photographed Sammy’s big brother, Sullivan, during summertime in Ottawa. It was so nice out we even adventured outdoors. This little guy, however, was born in the late fall. While it was unseasonably warm this fall (hello 16 degrees on Christmas Eve!), there was definitely no venturing outside for Sammy’s pictures.
Hiba and I have known each other for three years now, which seems incredible to me! I remember the first day I met her: we had so much in common, from our ages to how long we’ve been married, to our biggest passion — photography! When I went home that night I told Rob that I think I just made a good friend, and it turns out I was right :) Hiba is sweet and caring, and a great photographer herself! She and Peter have known each other for a long time, and together they compliment each other so well. You might remember them from their maternity session from back in the fall, when we walked around downtown Ottawa chasing the sunset.
Little Andreas arrived just two weeks after we had his mom and dad’s maternity portrait session. Talk about cutting it close! I’ve heard of maternity sessions where women actually go in labour during their maternity shoot, so I guess things could have been a lot closer! Though I do really want to photograph a birth at some point. (If anyone you know is interested in that, tell them to contact me!) When Andreas was five days old I left Ottawa and headed out to Munster to take his newborn portraits.
