Baby Alexa A Newborn Baby Girl Portrait Session

Ottawa-Maternity-Newborn-Photographer

There’s something so special about being a newborn photographer. I spend weeks looking forward to meeting this little person who I have no relation to, and then the day comes when I get to hold him or her. Mom and Dad are normally exhausted, and I think there is this nervousness that their new baby isn’t going to sleep soundly, or will pee on me, or somehow won’t be photogenic. But babies will do as babies do, and I get that. There’s no pressure. Babies are perfect just as they are. Some sleep right away, others take some coaxing. Some love to be swaddled, others prefer to be free. I do my best to make a comforting environment for them, and to go with the flow. It doesn’t take too long for mom and dad to relax — and maybe nap! — while I photograph the newest member of their family.

Baby Ryder Newborn Session in Ottawa

Little Ryder was wide awake when I arrived, peering up at me with super alert eyes. After spending a good many minutes cooing over his tiny newborn toes and delicate newborn hands, his mother fed him and he was soon fast asleep. What a champion sleeper! Ryder’s grandmother in Australia made him a gorgeous crochet blanket, so we used in one of the baskets. Having such a personal element included is a beautiful way to add even more sentimental value to newborn photographs.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of photographing little Sloan, who lives with her family just outside of Ottawa. She was so tiny, with dark brown hair and delicate lashes. I love photographing children, but they can be very rambunctious! With a newborn, I have to remind myself not to just sit back and stare for a minute or an hour. It’s not just me; there is definitely something hypnotic about watching an infant!

Baby Sullivan

A while ago, I posted photos of Jovana waiting to welcome her first baby. In late June, the baby arrived, and she and Kyle (the new dad) allowed me to spend some time with little Sully. It’s been awhile since I’ve been around a super fresh baby, and this one was so tiny! He refused to sleep at any point, but aside from one good squall he was very happy in the dozy way that only newborns can be. This time around I even managed to snag a photo of Kyle. I look forward to many more pictures of this little guy over the years!
