There’s something so special about being a newborn photographer. I spend weeks looking forward to meeting this little person who I have no relation to, and then the day comes when I get to hold him or her. Mom and Dad are normally exhausted, and I think there is this nervousness that their new baby isn’t going to sleep soundly, or will pee on me, or somehow won’t be photogenic. But babies will do as babies do, and I get that. There’s no pressure. Babies are perfect just as they are. Some sleep right away, others take some coaxing. Some love to be swaddled, others prefer to be free. I do my best to make a comforting environment for them, and to go with the flow. It doesn’t take too long for mom and dad to relax — and maybe nap! — while I photograph the newest member of their family.
Meeting Alexa was no different! It had just been a few weeks since her parents’ maternity session when she made an entrance into the world a week early. Such a sweet little girl! She took a while to fall asleep, but eyes closed or open, she was adorable. Her aunt gave her a gift of some headbands, which we incorporated into the session. I love the pink, blue, and green colours of these images, and I love love love that we got to shoot outdoors for a few minutes! These guys have an amazing backyard, and as soon as I saw it I suggested that if the rain held off we go outside.
I hope you enjoy these photos of baby Alexa!
