Every once in a while a family comes along who wants to brave the winter weather for some magical pictures. These Barrhaven family portraits in Ottawa’s south end really show the beautiful side of winter.

Taking family photos in the winter does require some flexibility. Since the weather can be unpredictable, you’ll need to have a few dates available in case of extreme cold. But every once in awhile we get a mild winter day and a golden sunset, and magic happens.

The key to classic winter images is outfit preparation, which the Batemans definitely nailed. The blues popped against the snow, and I just loved the beautiful red hair on both those ladies! If the day isn’t warm enough to brave fall weather clothing, then coordinated and dressy winter wear is a must. I’d love to tell you that images in snowsuits would look this good but unfortunately they won’t!

These guys brought along their dogs as well. The session was planned well in advance with the dogs only joining for the first half of the session. They brought a pup sitter for the second half!

Living in Canada does come with its challenges, but this winter portrait session is proof that you can have great family photos taken during the colder months!
