Amy and Kevin contacted me back in November to do winter maternity photos and I was so excited! You may remember them from their backyard wedding in Winchester last summer. Being a wedding photographer, I will admit that I’m always sort of on alert for baby announcements post wedding day. It comes with the territory! Of course, I don’t expect couples to start families right away, but these two, and their families, talked about starting a family in their speeches, so I hoped for them! They kept it out of social media, however, so their email came as a complete happy surprise!
This winter has been a wild one for weather, going back and forth between bitter cold and crazy thaws! Winter is such a beautiful time to take portraits, but it’s not for the faint of heart, and you definitely have to be flexible. Amy and Kevin, thankfully, are both brave and easy-going, but the wild card was baby-to-be for this maternity shoot! We actually rescheduled three times thanks to weekend after weekend of -30 degrees and lower.
The closer we got to Amy’s due date, the more nervous I got. First babies have a reputation for being late, but it’s definitely not a for sure thing! Two days before their session we had a huge thaw and it looked like spring (i.e. kinda gross). But Mother Nature got her act together and we had a gorgeous snow fall and a sunny day. Even though it was -18, it was the best we were going to get with baby due only two weeks away. And it’s a good thing we did! Little Mr. Colt arrived just five days after his first portrait session :)
These two live out in the country, which is beautiful but lacking in trees. If there’s one thing I love, it’s trees! I knew the perfect location that would show off all the snow. Since it was cold, hardly anyone was there. Amy and Kevin, thank you for braving the cold. I’m so glad we were able to squeeze in this session before your little guy arrived! I hope you’re enjoying the early days of parenthood. I’ll be watching Facebook for baby photos!
