Travel Tuesdays | Mount Robson, Canada

What do you do when you only have four days off between getting married and going back to work? You take an express honeymoon! Or, as we like to call it, a “mini-moon.” Three years ago I took my two weeks vacation from work to travel to Ottawa with Rob to tie the knot. We had to get there a week early for important things like getting a marriage license, meeting our Deacon, and — of course — the bachelor and bachelorette parties! Then there was the wedding day, and a couple days after the wedding to tie up loose ends, enjoy newly married bliss, and see our families. Which left us with just four days.

Travel Tuesdays | Bled, Slovenia

It rained on the 70th day of our European backpacking trip — for the first time. We had amazing weather for this trip, which I like to think was some sort of built up karma from all the camping trips I’ve been on over the years. We trained into Ljublijana, Slovenia and then took a bus to Bled. We arrived at the station in a downpour and had a 15 minute walk to our hostel, so we resigned ourselves to getting soaked and started the hike. Three minutes into our walk, a woman approached us and asked if we were looking for the hostel. We said yes. She asked us if we would like a private room with our own kitchen, bathroom, living room, cable TV and free internet for the same price as the hostel room.

Travel Tuesdays | Mui Ne, Vietnam

In February of 2010, during spring break in the Korean academic calendar, we travelled to Cambodia and Vietnam, where we based ourselves in Ho Chi Min City and took shorter excursions nearby. The farthest north we got (not very far at all) was Mui Ne, which is a tourist town on the coast. Mui Ne is known for its sand dunes and kite surfing. We felt like spending a couple days on the beach, so we jumped on a bus for $10 and prepared for the 4-hour ride which — like most of Asia — turned out to be closer to six. Of course, the fact that we had to stop to change a flat tire probably didn’t help.

Travel Tuesdays | Bodrum, Turkey

We were in Turkey on Canadian Thanksgiving 2008, which I still think is pretty funny. Turkey? Thanksgiving? Okay, maybe not that funny, but this was an amazing leg of our trip. Thanks to a tip in Cosmopolitan Magazine, of all places, we were able to book a super cheap Mediterranean Cruise a couple months before leaving for Europe. How cheap? For a week’s accommodations and half board (breakfast and our choice of lunch or dinner), we paid about $320. Yup. What a score! This was our “vacation” smack in the middle of our 3.5 month backpacking trip. It was a week where we could actually put our toothbrushes in a holder. Where we had room service! Where we could just relax on a beach and not worry about where to go and how to get there.

Nova Scotia Vacation Part 2 | Beaches and Camping

I didn’t take as many photos in the last week of our trip. Mostly because of a lack of space. You see, I forgot one 16GB memory card at work and I only have two. We brought Rob’s laptop and my external drive, plus a friend’s external drive. So, no problem, right? WRONG. Very wrong. Problem #1: Turns out Rob’s laptop only had 8GB of space left on it. Can you believe that? Time to clear out the computer! Problem #2: Turns out my hard drive had even less space on it! How is that possible??! Problem #3: Turns out that my friend’s brand new terabyte hard drive was safety locked for editing (or so I thought). Are you kidding me?!
