The Log Farm Sugarbush

When the snow starts melting, the sap starts running… and that means it’s sugar bush season! Every couple months some of my friends do our best to get together for brunch. We take turns hosting and cooking, and spend a few hours catching up on lazy Sunday mornings. This time, when Nicole suggested we hit the all-you-can-eat breakfast at The Log Farm Sugarbush, there were no arguments. Pancakes, sausages, beans, and home fries, and jugs of straight-out-of-the-tree maple syrup? Yes, please!

Travel Tuesdays | Halifax, Nova Scotia

Ottawa Travel Photographer

Earlier this month I went to Halifax, Nova Scotia for work. Once a year we have a national conference, the location of which changes every year so that our members visit a variety of locations (and occasionally have a conference in their home province). Last year was Whistler, BC and then year before was Lake Louise, AB. This time we headed east to give the Maritimes some love! As anyone who’s travelled for work knows, there’s precious little time to explore. However, I found a 45 minute window early on into my week there to take the camera outside and explore a little!

Travel Tuesdays | Lantau Island, Hong Kong

On April 29, 2009 we left our 60 square foot hostel room in the infamous Chungking Mansions. We walked down the flights of stairs since the elevator was permanently broken, thankful that we hadn’t booked a place on the 20th storey. Refusing the nice Indian men who offered us cocaine and hash on the stairwell, we broke free into the already muggy air and made our way to the harbour, stopping at Subway for breakfast to-go. Our timing at the docks was perfect, and for $2.50 we boarded the 50-minute ferry to Lantau Island. We ate along the way, watching the freighters and the impressive skyline as our ferry chugged through the roiling harbour.

Winter at Bruce Pit

Taking the puppy to Bruce Pit is a great change from her regular routine. Rob takes her on almost all of her walks, and she almost always goes to the same places (because that’s where she can run freely and play with other dogs), so once in a while it’s nice change up the scenery. Bruce Pit is a doggy heaven: acres and acres of fenced-in off-leash park, with sand pits, forest trails, and open hills. Some people have a bad opinion of the park, but it seems to be the only ones who feel that way are nervous dog owners who get apprehensive about other dogs being around. The whole point of having an off-leash area like this is for dogs to socialize, though, so if that’s not your thing than by all means, find someone else to enjoy nature ;)

Our Basement Renovation

It’s safe to say that Rob and I love our house. We loved it the minute we walked in and over two years later we still love it! The house was dated but in excellent shape, which meant that nothing needed to be renovated, but we had a lot of opportunity to make it our own and –hopefully — increase its value in the process. Over the past couple of years year we’ve done some little changes: painted a couple rooms, re-stained our bannisters, put up floating shelving, etc. A few bigger projects were also accomplished, like redoing Rob’s office and upgrading our walk-in closet (which is still in progress…). And of course my home office, which is almost ready to share on the blog! But the two biggest things that needed to be done were the kitchen and the family room in the basement.
